Disposables and sustainability are not exactly a logical combination. Or is it? After all, it is precisely in the sectors where sustainability is a challenge that profits can be made. To this end, we look at our own organization and processes and at the 'green' developments of our chain partners.
As a company, we are committed to 'green'. Not only by working according to the internationally standardized standard ISO14001, but also with, for example, electric lease cars (many employees also come by bicycle), separating waste, CO2-neutral regionally produced coffee, coffee mugs instead of plastic cups and soon also solar panels on the roof.
We also reduce waste as much as possible within our processes. For example, whenever possible we try to add unpackaged products to the trays and we discuss options for waste reduction with the end users. For example; does the tray contain products that are regularly thrown away? Is it an option to use 2-layer material instead of 3-layer material? We are working towards using mono-materials as much as possible, so that residual products can be processed into new products, and we are looking at the transport packaging of our bulk products together with the producer.
In addition to the developments within Medica Europe, our chain partners are also achieving a reduction of CO2. Since 2000, Vos Logistics has taken care of most of the storage and transport to our customers within Europe. This equates to the handling of approximately 1 million trays per year and an equally large amount of trade products. As one of the logistics leaders, Vos Logistics has developed various initiatives in recent years that reduce both CO2-emissions and energy consumption. The extra-long trailer (eco combis) to limit the number of journeys is an example of this.
